I don't know if this is relevant - I have a very similar configuration to Paul (SZ77R5 with 32GB of RAM,i7-3770 instead of i7-3770K). His problem seems uncannily similar to the problem I have been having except that I am running Windows 8.1 (running VMs with VirtualBox). Attaching my screenshot.

I've checked that this is not a Gnome 3 issue by running Fedora 17 in VirtualBox. On that setup, the Network Menu has an 'Auto broadband' entry under 'Mobile broadband'. Clicking this 'Auto broadband' launches the network settings utility which launches the Mobile Broadband Configuration Wizard.

IMO this is a bug, not a feature. If the new behaviour is a 'fature' then it bhaves like this through a bug and not by design. The bug is in the handling of the MAXIMIZE status for left and right puts and and inapropriate update of lastTarget to GridUnknown. The attached patch fixes this issue.
