it worked thanks i'm wondering why i never saw that in forum posts.
Backports get pulled to the main branch eventually though right? so in theory
would i have gotten this fix through normal update channels?

On my hp dv7-2040us the sound comes out from both speakers and headphones if i
plug the headphone in.
I'm using Karmic. On 9.04 i had no sound at all, and found a solution for that
by modifying the alsa configuration and setting model=hp-dv5 this time it's not
working

I am facing the same as #6
However i'm using hp dv7-2040us and i686, i wasn't sure i should open a new bug
as it's the same behavior.
Should i apply the suggestions proposed or should the fix be automatically
pulled by the updates?
i have the latest updates installed

What's the output of df -h ?
try manually deleting old images from your /boot then running dpkg --configure
-a , if that works (it did for me) go in synaptic and remove old kernels
(linux-image-2.6.xx) keep the newest, and one older then that..
