Importance
After some event (Ubuntu or Windows 7 update), my laptop began to suffer from
this problem. It affects *all* media players (mplayer, Flash player, ...).
I think it is related to the misidentification of a video card as a sound card.
My temporary solution:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/118459/no
The AMD64 microcode updates do not depend at all on any kernel 3.4
patches. Don't mix issues, please.
Anyway, I am a Debian Developer, so the Precise backport will have to be
handled by an Ubuntu developer. The package should be trivial to
backport (actually, it probably works as-is).

1. get the microcode from www.amd64.org, Do validate the gpg signature, do not
use the microcode if the signature is invalid!
2. unpack and install the bin files to /lib/firmware/amd-ucode
3. use /etc/modules to load the microcode module on boot

More details: the solution is composed of a common package that does the

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:
Yes, one workaround is*:
1) plug the headphone
2) open alsamixer
3) and unmute (press M) at the Speaker control.
* This have to be done every time after plugging the headphone.
Another workaround is**:
1) Open in text editor the file
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/
So here is a clarification that I should have done when reported the
bug...
Unespected behavior:
When plugging the headphone, speakers AND headphone output goes muted.
Expected behavior:
Only speakers goes muted, but not headphone output. After plugging
headphones there should be sound at the h
Sorry about not being clear, my english is not that much good =)
By "Speaker audio channel" yes, I mean "Speaker" volume in alsamixer. It
also mute the headphone output.
Seems that headphone ans speakers are muted/unmuted together by the
sound card, by the same volume control.
The strange thing
This is a pulseaudio bug, still present on 11.10
As a workaround edit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-
output-headphones.conf :
gksu gedit analog-output-headphones.conf
Than search for and comment this line like here:
[Jack_InputDevice]
#code = Headphone
