This doesn't affect only Windows, but Android too. I tried two different
apps (VNC Viewer from RealVNC Limited and Jump Desktop from Phase
Five Systems), but since upgrading my Ubuntu Desktop to Trusty both fail
with error messages related to incompatible security types.

Same here. On a fresh natty install bond interfaces are not working.
However, a machine upgraded from lucid to maverick to natty is not
affected.
The following is a temporary fix after installing ifenslave:

Same here. With karmic and earlier releases only the package acpid was
needed in the VM. To get the shutdown in a lucid-VM working one has to
install the package acpi-support too. However, this pulls in a lot of
dependencies like hdparm, x11-xserver-utils, radeontool, wireless-tools
and others.
