Public bug reported: Binary package hint: sysvinit These backports in Ubuntu 10.04 have a severe bug. USB external drives are not recognized any more. Downgrading to 2.87dsf-4ubuntu17 resolves the problem. Re-upgrading disables again USB recognizing. initscript__2.87dsf-4ubuntu17.3

Sorry. This appears to be a Kernel bug. The problem is independent of initscripts version. But it's confusing, because the first time you insert a USB HD or pendrive it's recognized, but after that USB mass storages are not recognized any more. Ubuntu 10.04 32bits Kernel version is
