I decided to move to the nouveau open driver.
Remove nvidia driver:
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*
and install the open one:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libdrm-nouveau1a
nouveau-firmware
It works very well (Ubuntu 12.04 Nvidia GeForce Go 8400M GS).
No Xorg crash so far
Confirmed with Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and Intel Centrino Wireless-N 130.
Little hope this bug is going to be fixed...too much time without no interest.
Do you know if the issue occurs also in Fedora 16 64bit? Or in the other
distributions with the most updated kernels?

Same issue with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit and nvidia-current 295.20-0ubuntu1.
I do not know if it's a coincidence, but the issue never happened when I
shutdown the pc from the terminal:
sudo shutdown -h now

I have the same problem, both with gshutdown 0.2-0ubuntu2 and gshutdown
0.2-1.
