machine is in the broken condition (only on fresh power-on).
After restart (soft boot) to obtain Internet I ran:

condition where the ethernet icon is missing. I had to save the data to
file since in this condition I have no Internet access.

I replaced Ubuntu 19.04 with 18.04 LTS. The problem is still the same.
1. Power up computer
2. Ethernet icon does not show. "Wired..." does not show. No network access.
3. Restart computer (soft boot).
4. Ethernet icon returns as well as Internet access.

OK I see now. I mistook Ubuntu 19.04 as the next LTS after 18.04. So my choices
will be:
1. Clean install of 18.04LTS
2. Upgrade to 19.10
3. Upgrade to 20.04 daily (after upgrade to 19.10)

resolved all the problems I am seeing. Machine has connected and stayed

the failures. If I define a static IP address, then things 'appear' to

I perhaps wasn't clear enough in my posting. I first got this problem
when using New Wave, so after finding various bug reports related to
themes I changed to New Look (I think) and the bug went away.
However, I then did a update via the updater and the problem returned. I
am not sure what was upd

I have suddenly started getting this issue, on themes that are NOT New
Wave. Originally, moving to a non-New wave theme fixed the issue, but
since I did an update earlier this evening, the fault has come back, but
for all the themes I have tried - so the workaround no longer works.
