I just realized that another performance issue I had is actually caused

I can confirm that the same behavior affects me and that the fix to run
metacity --replace disown and then compiz --replace disown works
will logged into the session, but breaks after logging out and back in
again.
I too believe the compiz is the culprit.

Looks like it is solved in Ubuntu 10.04 using audacious 2.3.
The same setup conditions as described in the initial report (except a
new Ubuntu version and new Audacious version) now produce sound when I
place a wave (.wav) within Audacious.

I found that I had problems editing or viewing the resulting Ogg file
on some platforms so I use this ffmpeg based script to transcode the

Confirmed on Hardy Heron (8.04) on my computer as well. Sound is
disabled and using a generic Intel onboard graphics chipset.
Istanbul allows me to click record, but then hangs and won't let my stop
the recording.
The only way to stop it is to kill the process manually.

I like to have gtkpod launch whenever I attach my ipod to my Ubuntu
system. In previous version of Ubuntu, I would just set gtkpod as the
preferred application to launch in the Preferred Applications System
Preferences.
After upgrading from Gutsy
I couldn't confirm this on my Gutsy installation.
I used the same steps that adw used, but hitting TAB after
tar tfSPACETAB
autocompleted a t and hitting TAB again gave me tgz and test.tar as
the completion options.
So I typed

tar tfSPACETAB

How did you get version 1.3.4 of Audacity on Gutsy. I have Gutsy and
Audacity installed and it lists 1.3.3-1 as the installed and latest
version of Audacity available from the standard repos.

I can confirm. I will say that I fixed it by looking at the script and
then loading up the appropriate packages. The problem is that one of
the podcasts that I was listening to switched to OGG format and I wasn't
aware of the change.
Because of the missing package, gtkpod locked up because it

to a vertical line. You can turn off the blinking of the block cursor
within the profile preferences, however.
