Yes, I tested that and it does work. But the patch with
gtk_printer_accepts_pdf had a bug - apparently that function always
returns true for the print to file printer, even if the user selects

Wow. The poppler pdf output seems to be... less than optimal. Running
pdfimages on a 3-page pdf that came from the evince Print preview
functionality gave me 10 000 ppm images. Poppler seems to embed bitmaps
into the pdf, one for each character of text.
No wonder the file is huge. Possibly
I tried forcing evince to output pdf. It sort of works, but the pdftopdf
filter consumes very large amounts of memory on large-ish documents. For
a 5 meg pdf file, the resident size of pdftopdf grew to 1.6 gigabytes
and the machine was swapping like crazy before I killed the process.

I did some more testing. After using gnome for a while, I can log out,
suspend from the gdm menu and still resume successfully. When I'm at the
gdm screen, switching to a console and doing sudo pm-suspend also
works.

i discovered something potentially interesting. With Pulseaudio running,
I get the low mic volume problem described in this bug. If I kill
pulse, and set the Sound capture setting in gnome-sound-properties to
HDA Intel STAC92xx Analog (ALSA) I still have the low volume problem.
However, if I
With a fully up-to-date Intrepid, the unmounting no longer kills the
system. However, it's still buggy. When I carry out the exact same steps
as above and try to unmount I get
$ umount ~/Desktop/nullinfinity
umount: /home/jbr/Desktop/nullinfinity mount disagrees with the fstab

Another workaround is to use ctrl together with f,b,n and p instead of
the arrow keys.

I used to have this problem on my Dell Inspiron 1420, which was upgraded
from Hardy.
But after a clean reinstall of Intrepid, it doesn't happen anymore.
