This bug is fixed in Maverick, but not in Lucid LTS. Tired of waiting for a fix for the LTS, I found the patch and recompiled libgtk2.0-0_2.20.1-0ubuntu2. Get the sources for libgtk2.0 via apt-get source, apply the patch available here:

I just found out that the mic won't work from a cold boot, but once I suspend to RAM, it seems to be working fine after waking up. Don't know if it's related, but the touchpad also acts up from a cold boot sometimes (unstable, jumpy cursor) and this gets fixed with a suspend-resume cycle as well.
