My list of installed software shows : 7zip, Advanced Desktop Effects Settings

The suggested solution (adding sleep 1 command to /etc/init.d/gdm.conf)

Installing mountall 2.15 appeared to fix the issue, but it has returned.
touch /forcefsck does not cause the issue - it only appears without
interference (seemingly). I also noticed it started occuring again when
the fsck on boot reports 'clean' as
roper version to choose with relation to the stock
kernel. It appears the mapping selects a kernel from back in August of
last year as the correct one that maps to my stock kernel from April
2010 of this year. This makes no sense to me.

Exact reason found and corrected: see bug #539467. The "SATA Link Power"
was being turned off, apparently when there was still disk activity
waiting. Applying "lucid-proposed" version of pm-utils-powersave-policy
(currently at 0.3.1) resolves the issues about stopping completely.

After some extensive searching, I've concluded that this is probably not
a new issue, and in fact may be five years old. That being said, I don't
ever recall having this problem in the previous versions of Ubuntu that
I was using on any of my computers (incl. 9.04 and 8.10). It is a
problem in that
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 i386 fresh from a CD into a VirtualBox,
installed the package gle-graphics, and got the same error. So, it
definitely DOES NOT work "out-of-the-box". (Or in the VirtualBox!)
The package just needs to be recompiled against the version of
libqt4-dev that actually ships

and tried to recreate the package, I do NOT get the error after
installing the package as compiled on my computer. From what little I
understand after searching for the missing symbol on Google, it seems

Final conclusion: it seems to be a problem with the Adblock Plus addon
and hence not a firefox bug. Try disabling, then re-enabling it, or
failing that, uninstalling, then re-installing it.

Timo- on a whim I tried removing an extension from firefox (Adblock
Plus), after which the problem seemed to vanish. I have since re-
installed the extension and tried my best to recreate the problem, but

Yes, when I turn off desktop effects, I see the firefox window is coming
up beneath the window that had the focus beforehand. I do not get this
behavior on another computer of mine, also running Lucid. So, let's see
if we can figure out what the computers doing this have in common...

$ sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu
