Since reporting this bug, I decided to test a theory by removing all proprietary modules from my running kernel. So, I unloaded the following: vmnet(P) vmblock(P) vmmon(P) nvidia(P) and I have not had a crash in over 19 hours. I am going to try another couple of experiments. First, I will try

Unfortunately, the crashes began again even without the nvidia and vmware modules loaded. I tried to do a fresh install with the release version of hardy (both the server and desktop editions), and the installer kernel would crash before bringing up the system. I switched to the 32bit server edit
