kernel bug based on your description.
Doing a kernel bisect is probably the fastest approach to identifying

The upstream lttng-modules project is compatible and buildable on all
>3.0 kernels. The new lttng-modules 2.12.2 code should continue to
function fine on the 5.4 kernel.
I confirmed that the this latest package builds and loads without any
errors or warnings on the 5.4 kernel.

For this updated source, package, I have compiled it for the 5.4 kernel on
Focal, and confirmed that:
a) The module now builds properly on 5.4
b) The module is loadable into the 5.4 kernel (without errors or warnings)
