Sorry for the incorrect information - I've installed 13.04 fresh and did
*not* do an upgrade as stated. Therefore, no fglrx was installed. I did
perform the steps presented in the wiki to switch from fglrx to the
radeon driver anyways and several times like so:
sudo apt-get remove --purge

The sudden working indicates a broken initramfs, which may be either a bug in

@marko-j The idea behind the kernel testing is to find the first
version, that introduced the bug - if the 3.5-rc4 works for you, could
you please retest the latest kernel? Maybe the problem wasn't in the
kernel but in a library after all or was introduced on the way up from
3.5-rc4.

Hi Joseph,
yes, I've installed the 3.6.1-kernel on the 12.04 installation. I've
setup four partitions for the test: shared /boot, shared /home, and two
separate Root-Partitions, one for 12.04 and one for 12.10.
As the bug does not happen on 12.04-root with the default 3.2.0-kernel,

Hi Joseph,
the box has been processing torrents and my usual work without any
occurance of the problem, so I suspect the problem to be a regression
from 3.2 to 3.5. My kernel is currently 3.2.0-31.

Hi Joseph,

sudden data loss, shouldn't the bug get a higher importance than medium?

Hi Joseph,
I reinstalled 12.04 in a separate partition and have been working with
it for the past 4 hours with harddrive intensive applications (which
usually led to the error a lot faster) and so far, I cannot reproduce

Got the mistake: in the network-manager, the wireless network was
deactivated (nm-applet - wireless network). This is a bit confusing, as
my BIOS-setting allows the hardware switch to do several things
(de/activate bluetooth, wireless and WWAN) and ubuntu seems to overwrite
this setting.
Anyway,
confirmed in new 2.6.38-8-generic as well. I'll see if I can check the
vanilla kernel tonight.
