Im not sure of the exact order as I also repeated several steps but in
essence I relied on 3 things.
1) Disabling all third party software
Bug seems to be fixed with the upgrade to 4.13.1 and applying a new
motherboard bios update.
Have been running 3 transcoding sessions + other tasks for 3 days
without reproducing bug. I think it is likely fixed at this stage.

Tried the new kernel and it borked my system (combined with another

the install wanted to play in that drive hence the need to force it onto
the new NVME drive.

Performed latest set of updates and retested. Couldn't run apport-
collect from the terminal immediately after failure as it needed a
graphical book in order to authenticate via Firefox, so ran after fixing
fstab and rebooting. I don't know if the logs are therefore useful?

As requested, I have now set package to linux (ie kernel) due to the
point in the boot sequence at which the issue occurs. I'm far from
qualified to speculate but I am reasonably sure that this is not a

Installing Lubuntu 14.04 on VirtualBox. Selected Install from boot menu,
then selected an encrypted installation. Installer warned about insecure
swap, requiring me to manually run swapoff, then returning to me to the
installer. I unselected both encryption and lvm, installer

Thanks for the detailed response, all points duly noted.
Whilst I do not think that adequate provision has been made to target XP
users I do accept that (particularly at this late stage) upgrading 13.10
to LTS is not the right solution.
It remains to be seen whether the current EOL date for XP
be a good idea, imho.

normally create /etc/timezone, and is it doing so on a fresh install but
not an upgrade?

missing /etc/timezone file. So I created it as root with the content:

.. and repeated the test, (datetime2.log), however I now have a time being

It's constant: I haven't seen the actual time since I upgraded to
Oneiric (note: I was on Ubuntu Classic before the upgrade so can't
comment on whether it worked in Unity before that, but I'm pretty sure I
would have noticed if it did as I did try Unity a couple of times).

Failes to create package when started from directory with spaces
I'm also experiencing this issue using Compiz + ATI with yakuake. It
seems to work fine once it's open, and it closes fine, just hangs for a
bit when initially pressing 'f12'. My card is a Radeon HD3450, and I'm
also running Jaunty.
