When I start certain applications (for instance blender, texmaker, a
plot using matplotlib) X crashes and I'm back at the login screen. This
is what I can extract from /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

When you install 'spyder' it doesn't show up in the Applications >
Programming menu.
Since the current version of spyder (1.0.3) has some other bugs* which
have been fixed already, I'd suggest to upgrade to a more recent
