This bug can be circumvented by clearing out
~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions.
The problem is likely due to extensions not having adapted to API changes
between gnome-shell 3.2 -> 3.4. Pretty weak that this prevents the shell and
window manager from loading. Bug should probably be forwarded
