Adding the line "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" to "/etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf" and switching the capture device from "Front Mic" to
"Int Mic" using alsamixer got the internal mic on my new Sony Vaio CW-
series working. Annoyingly, every time Pulseaudio is restarted
(including reboot of course) the capture device is reset to "Front Mic"
and the internal microphone seizes to work until the setting is manually
changed to "Int Mic" again.

I did not install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
package.
