This is tremendously annoying and it's only one of the endless
regressions in Unity. Canonical should SERIOUSLY consider rolling back
to Gnome which was much more stable and usable (or to whatever MATURE
and reliable, serious destop environment, unlike Unity which looks like
an alpha release). The
After a fresh boot, it only took FIVE MINUTES for this to happen again, and
this time it was NOT by clicking on Thunderbird launcher icon. It was when I
right-clicked on a zip file in Nautilus and chose "extract here".
It may be completely unrelated to Thunderbird (though TB was open).

thunderbird was already open). The system had been running for a long
time.
This time, like the first time, I couldn't do ctrl+alt+F1 because it
didn't respond even to keyboard. So I had to power down and lost all my
unsaved data.

systematic manner.

I forgot, there is one thing that is CERTAINLY bug (even from the point of view
of those who don't consider this issue a bug):
SOME applications have their open window icons separated from the launcher icon
(and the launcher icon keeps opening new windows), while OTHER applications
have the open

only in the magnitude of the oversight.
Nobody in his right mind would defend mixing launcher icons with open window
icons. Prove me wrong by mentione ONE single advantage in having them mixed.

Note that this doesn't happen systematically, I observed it just once up

This has happened only once to me. I guess it's random.
I had Thunderbird open and maximixed. I moved the cursor to the left of
the screen; the dock or panel with application icons appeared. I clicked
on some icons, but the clicks somehow "went through" and reached
Thunderbir
@Phillip unfortunately I won't be able to try the CD any soon since my
CD/DVD drive is broken :(

Another thing, looks like this is actually triggered by some messages
arriving. I got it crashing often when I was chatting simultaneously
with several people.
