@Christian: I don't think so, these were apparently fixed in etckeeper
0.56ubuntu2.1 which is the version I'm running and I still see the
problem.
I've actually been able to trace the problem to $VCS subprocess launched
by etckeeper hanging when trying to write to stdout/stderr. What is
happening
Yeah, as Scott already mentioned, pidfiles introduce their own set of
problems, but also they aren't a solution for all use cases. E.g. the
daemon I was dealing with does not have any way to write out a pidfile,
forks multiple times, requires a script to do some setup before it's
launched, and is
Given that the PID would be killed pretty much as soon as it started and
that you're most likely to trigger this while writing an unstart job for
a daemon, I'd agree that the potential for serious problems is low.
However, I don't think this is a user error/mistake, some daemons are
just more awkw
Likewise to using a script stanza, this is also a problem when a script
that actually starts a daemon is specified in `exec'.
Although it wouldn't help with the original problem (avahi-deamon), for
scripts a workaround/fix could be if you could tell upstart the name of
the final executable, so it
Just a note that this no longer happens on Lucid (KMail 1.13.2) for me.

Logged another bug report which relates to this one (bug #141429). In
the first case I've noticed it in restricted-manager-kde, this time I've
noticed it also affects power-manager. Is anybody else able to
reproduce it? Or am I just "lucky" :D

After the most recent update of python-qt3, python is getting killed with

Just an update: I can confirm that after downgrading these three the bug is
gone:

Hi! I just got this on gutsy tribe5 after upgrading xorg from 7.2-5ubuntu6 to

This is more general I think. In fact there is no way at all to add
'domain YOURDOMAIN.COM' and you can add 'search YOURDOMAIN.COM' only by
tricking dhcp client to supersede the domain name (in case the dhcp
fails to send the domain properly).
