The patch does the opposite of what the Totem FAQ says.
I admit, the Totem FAQ may not seem the most authoritative source. So
here's what the GNOME HIG [1] says about using the space key as a

the various widgets
As I understand from the Totem FAQ, space cannot be used as an
accelerator because it's reserved for activating regular user interface
elements for accessibility reasons.

I have a similar problem with latest kernel from 10.4 . My problem is more
severe as I can't even boot because of it and it doesn't go away.
a few seconds after the Starting up message I get:
BUG: soft lockup - CPU0 stuck for 61s! [events/0:6]
and It goes on like this for minutes till I get
I noticed the same behavior in Totem. I found a related Gnome bug that explains
this behavior:

Space is reserved to activating widgets for accessibility purposes. It can't be
used for anything else. There's an entry in the Totem FAQ about this:
regarding the synaptics touchpad, and also overrides all other
means i know of for making such settings. I have tried xorg.conf, hal
and udev, and all are ignored/overriden.
An option like don't override the touchpad for gnome-settings or
user defined options would help alot!

mihai

I can also confirm that the updated package (libopenal1) in lucid-
proposed (mentioned in bug 351732) fixes the issue I have with mplayer
and pulseaudio. I can now hear all sounds fine.
Thank you Daniel!

Unclutter is causing this. Starting Unclutter with the -noevents option
is a workaround.
A better description of the problem: when hovering the cursor over a
text input widget of a not-focused window, a cursor will start blinking
in that widget when the Unclutter timeout expires.
