Maybe this should be an enhancement request then. I don't want to touch
my hard disk. And if the live CD ISO can boot from a USB stick, why
can't Ubuntu itself not launch from an USB stick?
Also, if it is not supported, why can I select this option in the
installer as if it is supported?

BTW: When I read the original bug more carefully it looks like someone is
trying to install the boot loader on the very same USB stick as the live CD.
This is not what I was trying; I did the following instead:
* one SD card with Live CD
* one empty USB stick to install Ubuntu on.

Today's upgrade of linux-headers-4.4.0-63 pkg to version
4.4.0-63.84~14.04.2 has fixed the issue for me :)

This systems was running 14.04 before I wiped and reinstalled. Never had
any issue with it.
I just did a "apt-get install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge", so I'm
running on 4.8.0 now. It'll take some days to see if the issue comes
returns.

I have the same issue on my HP Elitebook 850, running Ubuntu LTS 14.04

i have installed ubuntu on three pc. If i delete a file or directory on
one of them, these changes are only chown in the browser-account.
Nothing happens on the other pc. Renaming eg works fine. THX and the
rest (ubuntu) is fantastic.

I can confirm this bug with 9.04 and a Twinhead Stylebook 12D. The
workaround (sudo modprobe -r psmouse;sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps)
also works for me. The issue appeared after the upgrade to 9.04. The
touchpad had worked before with 8.10.
