I am unable to test any of your "fixer uppers". (back on windows)
However, the latest (Karmic) did not work when installed and updated.
(There for I am back on Windows XP again).

During boot of Jaunty (Started with Interepid), I noticed my router
light will sit and blink ('twinkle') like high traffic.
When I get inside of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu Jaunty (Again it started in
Intrepid, Hardy worked fine), I have to sudo rmmod e1000e, then modprobe
