I'm willing to do that, but like I said, the program doesn't crash, and
seems to enter an endless loop.
What should I do, then? Enter the loop, then ctrl+c in gdb and get the
trace then?
How can I prevent gnome-panel from respawning on its own to be able to

I'm sorry I totally forgot about this. I have installed cheese on an
Intrepid Ibex (fresh install, keeping my /home/), and cheese says it
doesn't detect any webcams.
I haven't tried to do Joori's trick again, though. Anyway, it should
work out of the box, right?

This is a critical bug (totally prevents evolution from working, if
you've dist-upgraded and don't know where it comes from). Shouldn't it
be commited in interpid-update ?

The cam seems to be recognized, but when I try to use it in Ekiga, all I
get is a flickering pink/green screen.

Ok, it seems to be fixed.
After the fresh install, it still wasn't working with my father's
account, but this time it worked with a fresh user, so I assumed it was
somewhere in a config file in my father's home.
I simply deleted the whole ~/.sane folder, and launched xsane again. I
had done that
I haven't updated my father's computer to Hardy yet, but I'll do it
during this weekend. I'll let you know.
I'm probably going to do a fresh install, preserving only /home/, which
I haven't done on my father's pc since at least Dapper (only dist-
upgrades).

the exceptions defined in GNOME.

I use a proxy at the university to access the web, and GNOME's
configured to handle it.

I just installed edgy (fresh install) on my father's computer, and the
problem is still there with xsane-0.991.

Ok I tested it on my edgy (dist-upgraded just before the test) and I get
the same result as with dapper. Green after the modprobes.
What can I do to help? Are there better programs than Ekiga for testing
webcams? I guess there is, but I'm clueless about them. Maybe there are
some commands I could

When I double click on a .rm file, totem launches, but crashes directly.
I suspect it is a gstreamer issue, as right-clicking on the file and
selecting properties crashes nautilus as well.
