I have a Toshiba Satalite L40 as well. The specific model is L40-14N.
acpid seems to be the curlpit. It also seems that repeted starting and
stopping will stop the problem (until reboot) though this may be a
coincidence.
Attached is a log of acpid running for 10 seconds with the -d switch on.

the xorg.conf file or the xorg log or the hardware configuration has any
influence on the man page.
My xorg configuration is working fine; I just had to go looking around
on the internet to find out what the ``new'' AccelMethod
I'd guess the problem is not so much the status itself, but rather the
lack of explanation to go with it. The definition as given in
dictionaries is ambiguous enough to apply to several parts of the bug
reporting process. One can consider a way of incorporating a DFN tag
or something to go along
