I experience a similar problem with my Dell System XPS L322X (Ubuntu
developer laptop). It occurs when I first connect with my TV usin HDMI
(with a DisplayPort adapter) and then connect to an external monitor
using DisplayPort (without an adapter).

the problem. The Oracle JVM was not affected by this, only OpenJDK.

I am using Ubuntu Karmic on a Latitude E5400 and I am using an external
screen. Sometimes windows just disappear from the screen and I have to
log out and inn for things to work normal. This happens after I have
resumed from suspend or changed the xrandr settings. In my messages log

I got this problem on my Gutsy Gibbons installation. The fix provided by
Brad Crittenden made emacs22 load it's internal python-mode while
python-mode was installed for emacs21 (I need to run both together).
However, python-mode did not load in emacs21. The source of this
problem was a missing sym
