I hit this problem just running gnome-screensaver on the command line
seemed to kick it back into action so that ctrl + alt + L now works
seems its not started at boot.

data grid not displaying resultset is
just an update not sure what happened but laptop now freezes just after
alsa-state in the boot process using kernel, 3.13.0-4-generic.
so its may be trying to load the wrong driver, not sure if there is a kernel
parameter i can add to stop this ?
blacklist alsa module perhaps ?

okay now got it working with the intel driver using the settings below.
add to linux boot params in grub video=VGA-1:1368x768
create the below then your desktop will work with intel driver
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf

Okay but what do you need if I don't use that option I can not see
anything so what do I need to do to get the logs ? Or look into it

tried 13.10 and 14.04 both do not load the intel driver. to reach a desktop you
need to specify nomodeset and fbdev at boot and remove the vesa driver.
the vesa driver just corrupts the display, if you have any suggestions for me
to try fire a way and i will see what i can
looking in windows device manager, its reported as Intel SST Audio
Device (WDM) using realtek_fw_sst.bin it does not seem to tell you the
model in windows how ever.

I am seeing this issue as well, all results popup instantly except for
local applications i will get results on music and books i can buy and
local files but takes a while for my local application to appear.
happens on two laptops one with radeon the other with intel graphics and
its a tad
same here on ati radeon HD 5000 graphics card in case its a display
issue, had this issue for a while keep checking but still there quite
important bug to see fixed for anyone that does web development on
ubuntu :)

seems to have improved with latest karmic updates, but still happens
after a long time or if you block up the fan to speed it up, again does
not happen in windows, so seems like it something todo with temprature
control on this laptop.

no luck with the fan was not much dust on it, the only difference i have
noticed is my laptop is a lot quiter, but still getting reboots awaiting

okay i have been through ubuntu 8.10 9.04 and 9.10 live cds i have done
a minimal install added the nvidia drivers and tried a few 3d games all
have resulted in a reboot the wierd thing is that i am sure i have
played games on this machine previously in linux, and windows xp works
perfectly.

okay, i have tried mainline kernel 2.6.28 2.6.29 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 and
all have hit the same problem with the reboots after launching a few
opengl apps.
I am going to go download the latest karmic and the old jaunty and try
both these and see if i have any better luck.

Same problem on 32bit jaunty with a VGA compatible controller: nVidia
