Trying to solve my problem with ubuntu (gnome version), it seems that it
can be done by launching Xrandr early in Xsession.
What I did was to create a file called 45custom_xrandr-settings
what is in this file:
EXTERNAL_OUTPUT=VGA1
INTERNAL_OUTPUT=DP1
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT
Back to the future...
This problem was present on ubuntu 10.04 and could be solved by switching to
Kubuntu.
Same thing with ubuntu 10.10... I switched to Kubuntu 10.10 64 bit this morning
and it works (no problem at all when connecting external screen).
I really think it is a problem related
