I actually download 64 bit version of Linux 10.04 last night and am now
happily using that distro.

well is not good news!
I ran the command and a lot of old files were cleaned up and I was asked if
ok- said yes. New files were updated and I was instructed to restart.
Restarted and crashed!
The Ubuntu logo and sliding bar shows after initial boot but goes off after
loading bar gets 2/3 way

I ran the sudo dpkg --configure -a | tee ~/Desktop/configure1 command and
the output to the desktop contained nil characters, so no point in attaching
it.

I was updating from version 8.04 which I presumed would give me the newer
version. I don't want to download a new distro as I am worried that a new
installation will fry my data when/if hard drives are reformatted.I
don't have enough off line storage to back up my data completely either.
