I have tested 9.04 final live CD and I found that changing the HAL
keymapping to something else than presentation makes the hotkey work.

Could you please post the output of the following command:
ls -l /etc/rc*.d/S*hotkey-setup
Then please try this:
sudo mv /etc/rc2.d/S20hotkey-setup /etc/rc2.d/S29hotkey-setup
Reboot, then test your hotkeys again. This worked for me.

In Hardy xev showed keycode 241 for Fn+F8 while in Intrepid the keycode
changed to 244 and it is no longer working.

yes, Thunderbird and many other IMAP clients are able to retrieve the
correct headers from Gmail (either accidentally or by puspose).
the whole thing depends on the way how the client requests the headers
from the Gmail server. it turned out that using the ENVELOPE imap
command works around this

following this link and describing the details of the problem:
