Paul, the following resurrected my M-Audio 2496 after ugrading to
Karmic. Much gratitude to muttnik and JoeP!
1. I edited /lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules by adding this line
for the M2496.
SUBSYSTEMS==pci, ATTRS{vendor}==0x1412, ATTRS{device}==0x1712,
ATTRS{subsystem_vendor}==0x1412,

Getting this chipset to work under Pulseaudio has been an ongoing
problem. Disappointing to see it remains so with Karmic.

Hi Florian
I did a clean install of Jaunty around the time of its release, and pulse
just worked with my MAudio 2496. I don't know how to explain it if as you
say the bug is still alive and kicking. It's a while ago now but I'll have a
look in more detail.

Sebastien et al.: Thanks so much for sorting this..My panel no
longer freezes, and my ICE1712 soundcard (MAudio 2496) just fired up
without the need for a custom Pulseaudio config file. Whooppee!!

I have the same problem. Causes gnome-panel to freeze. ICE1712
(Maudio2496) like Florian's.
