evolution-indicator package installed, and the one that never crashed
did not.
Hopefully, removing that package solves the issue.

Not sure why they weren't detected anymore, but adding the module for
the wifi controller and sound card to /etc/modules seems to have solved
the problem for now.

After upgrading to linux-image-4.8.0-37-generic, bootup suddenly takes
much longer than with previous kernels (minutes vs 14 seconds or so),

That Optiplex is actually my work machine. However, I have also
observed this on my laptop, a Dell Latitude E7450 with an Intel video
card that also uses the i915 driver. I re-enabled animations in compiz,
and it just crashed. I do see a crash file there, which I will attach
here.

Thanks for the heads up about updating the BIOS, next time I will
definitely do that before submitting a report to avoid wasting your
time.
However, the problem still occurs (after re-enabling animations in
compiz). Here is the output of the desired command:
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && s
I have disabled animation in compiz as per the other bug's report for
now.

BOOM...problem solved...
I tested under a Guest session, and that did not reproduce the error,
which obviously points to something in my environment, as you obviously
already know.
So, I had a shortcut to switch keyboard layouts set to Shift-L, Shift-R
(hit both shifts together). That seems to b
OK, adding two logs. The first one, terminatorlog just had me open a
new instance of terminator with the -d option, opening a new tab, and
trying to change its name to something with a capital.

Hmm...odd. I can reproduce it on both my 15.04 systems, but they are
configured identically.
I switch between the French and English keyboard using...whatever Unity
uses.

Trying to change a tab title to something with a capital letter fails.
You can double click on a tab title, start typing, but as soon as you
type a capital letter, you get kicked out of the edit UI and the old
title remains. It's basically the same as hitting escape.
