I tried this in a Debian sid chroot with dpkg 1.15.8.10 and cannot
reproduce the problem (but I'm not using aufs). Can you try with a newer
version like the one in natty ?

This is a bug in udev only... if udev wants to diverts its own file it
must not use "--package udev" otherwise it instructs dpkg to divert the
file EXCEPT when it's provided by udev (which it does). So in reality

It's definitely not a dpkg bug. In fact it looks like a user problem

While dpkg can throw out errors about decompression, this can only
happen during --unpack and not during --configure. The error message is
clear, the problem lies in one of the programs executed by the the post-
installation script. There's only update-initramfs in there so that must
be the culprit

(commit 6a7a20c72325a57762e34f5dbb9f79ba73b5d496). It's Ubuntu-specific
at this point because the regression has been introduced in the 1.16
development cycle.

("createinstaller-complex/install")... but I don't get why it fails.
Any way, can you try with a more recent dpkg? There have been lots of
