After I rebooted the machine it's working fine for some reason.
Pulseaudio is installed so that wasn't it.

After upgrading to 11.10 all the games I run with wine have no sound.
Bioshock runs just fine, TES-Oblivion is incredibly slow. Winecfg's
sound test makes a crack, and the button locks up.
