This bug was never assigned to anyone and has not been fixed after 5 years,
this is quite incredible.
I guess people just moved on to other hardware or software configuration.

Just to clarify (sorry if I am stating the obvious), there are two
issues here.
1] The touchpad buttons do not work at all (focus of this bug)
I could fully resolve the issue by at least two ways.
- The patched kernel proposed in Comment #11
- The clickpad.tar.gz patch proposed in Comment #5,
