ok, I did the test.
As predicted, kernel does not boot through the grub 1.99rc2
But, your kernel boots ok when run directly from efi shell.
This is the first kernel that boots ok.
Btw, this laptop does not have any radeon GPU (Optimus NVIDIA + Intel
HD3000).

I did try to boot on your kernel.
The latest testdrive server (28-09-2012) boots ok on my laptop.
Differences is there is a new grub -2.00-5ubuntu isntalled as a bootloader.
It's maybe not related to kernel after all.
I'll try today to boot with your kernel on old grub.

Try this command to install the grub :
grub-install --efi-directory=/boot/efi/ --target=x86_64-efi --recheck --debug
Where /boot/efi is the directory where the EFI partition (/dev/sda1) is mounted.
I was able to regenerate a grub install with it.
Then run grub by hand in the efi shell.

Guys I found that upgrading grub to 2.00-5ubuntu3 fix the booting problem. The
grub-efi found in quantal works ok with.

No luck up to rc4.
However I managed to boot previous kernels (a.k.a. everything from
3.5.0-14).
I did an update of the ubuntu installation and noticed at the boot that the
grub was saying 1.99rcx.

The machine is an ASUS Laptop N53SN.
In BIOS mode, everything works ok, but in UEFI, the kernel does not boot.
The only way to boot it is to provide the noefi option on the cmdline.
This machine never booted with any ubuntu distribution in efi.

I rebuild grub2 from upstream.
I confirm that simply replacing the grub-mount executable by the newer make the
hangs vanish.
The grub-update comples sucessfully. No more kill -9 on the grub-mount.

I had to boot on previous kernel 3.0.0.
Symptoms are boot freezes. When debugging, issuing a vgscan works ok.
doing the vgchange -a y just hangs. I need to reboot the system afterwards.

Doing install ubuntu-desktop after upgrading natty gives me the hang.

Install maverick with multiple separate FS minimal install
upgrade to natty
then install ubuntu-desktop

I got a different behaviour but not a hang.
Systems switchs to vt7 and then stays on this vt.
Nothing happens then.
But system runs, switching back to tty1 show the login as usual.

Ok, I managed to reproduce the breakage.
1- Install maverick minimal (I just selected openssh server) with multiple
separate FS on LVM
2- update maverick -> latest update.
3- change apt to point to natty
4- upgrade -> linux-image, mountall, libc6, grub-pc
then hang

I tried to setup a natty server in a Virtualbox machine.
Unfortunately, the VM is working OK.
I'm now trying to setup a maverick then upgrade to natty to see if it gonna
break.

One user using grub and natty is bitten by this problem.
All kernels since the 2.6.37-9 have the XEN_PRIVILEGED_GUEST set.
update-grub uses this criteria to check if the kernel is a Xen kernel or a
normal kernel.
That means that normal kernels don't show up in the grub menu since the
2.6.37-9 ker
It should read :
getty -8 -n -l /bin/bash 38400 tty8&
getty -8 -n -l /bin/bash 38400 tty6&
If you don't gives the getty that magic value, it's won't work.

To help people who are stuck, here's the operations I need to do at each boot :
When in the grub chooser (hold shift while booting if it does not show up),
edit the boot configuration :
go the to line which says :
linux /vmlinuz-2.6.38-5-generic root=/dev/ ro
crashkernel=384M-2G:64M,2G-:128M

I'm indeed proti from freenode.
I made some progress regarding this issue.
I found that if you comments all the entries in the /etc/fstab that refers to
an UUID (in my case, it's /boot and the swap), then mountall behaves normaly
and the system is able to boot up to the gdm login.
