@connorp, Are you using GRUB or GRUB2? Do you know?
You can tell by checking to see if you have a file in /boot/grub called
menu.list. If you do, you grub GRUB. If you don't, you have GRUB2.

xserver-xorg-video-intel or linux-headers-2.6.31-14(generic?) since both
packages seem to deal with Intel card drivers.

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet
When choosing to shut down the system, the dialog box which says the
system will shut down in 60 seconds comes up as normal.
However, the button labeled Shut Down does not do anything. When it
was left alone, VirtualBox reported
Seems to be an issue with the 2.6.28-13-generic kernel. Tested 2.6.30
and Jaunty was able to shut down without issue.

Attaching another screenshot, showing the end snippet of what I think is
a kernel message?
This is the screen I get if I hinder usplash from showing up by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F7. It just stays there until I force halt.

The bug seems to lie in wireless. Flip the wireless radio kill switch
before halting/rebooting and it works fine.

orange bar hits the end, and the Ubuntu logo and bar go away, all I end
up with is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen.
