Probably seeing the same here on an Thinkpad X230 with Ubuntu 14.04.
Didn't have this issue until recently. The keyboard input doesn't work
until I interact with the icons in the top-bar. Just clicking and
dismissing the cog menu is enough to make keyboard input work again.
