Thanks for the detailed help but I have already fixed the problem on my end by sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mrpouit/ppa which gets me the STABLE 2.8.6 version of abiword on my Ubuntu 12.04 PRODUCTION SYSTEM. Not a single crash or weird behaviours since then. Meanwhile, crash reports with 2.9.2

I would just like to add that IME the issues with 2.9.2 is a LOT worse than just problems with scrolling. When I open docs created in 2.86 and try to fix everything that is wrongly positioned and whatnot, 2.9.2 keeps crashing on me every 5 minutes. That makes 2.9.2 compleately unusable for me. --
