One more thing I remember (if anyone ever runs into this problem again and happens to stumble upon this report) - the problem temporarily went away when I didn't log out of Gnome properly (but used CTRL-ALT- Backspace for example). The next time I logged out of Gnome properly, the problem returned.

One more thing I remember (if anyone ever runs into this problem again and happens to stumble upon this report) - the problem temporarily went away when I didn't log out of Gnome properly (but used CTRL-ALT- Backspace for example).
