I had the same issue until I played with the alsa settings and now I
have no sound at all (speakers are not muted).
The fix James reported doesn't apply as the line referenced in the
article does not exist in my alsa-base.conf.

This problem happens to me when running multiple tabs (10) in Chrome all
running the same web page which uses Javascript to access the Google
geocoding api. The page doesn't use Flash or sound.
After a number of hours Chrome becomes unresponsive and when I close
Chrome I can hear heavy disk
I don't think the alpha version of flash is ready yet to be included for
basically the same reason that the ndiswapper solution should not be
included - they both have problems.
The alpha version seems ok on the surface, but it has one mayor flaw -
embedded links simply do not fire when clicked,
