exact same problem on the latest Lucid. I didn't experience it in
Jaunty, so it would appear to be a regression.

I thought that too, but manually adding libwfb from the nVidia driver
didn't fix it. Also, reports from bug #98641 don't prevent X from
running at all - they get an Xorg.0.log file. I do have an 8xxx-series
card though.

I've been told it could be SLI playing up, and have had it suggested
that I remove the second graphics card. Sounds plausible, but I'm not
using Ubuntu right now so I can't test it.

the nvidia driver from nvidia-glx-new X doesn't load at all - it doesn't

When booting Ubuntu (64-bit) I expect to see either a bunch of
diagnostic information telling me about the system loading or the Ubuntu
splash screen. However, when I installed Gutsy on this system I get
nothing on the screen from the bootloader to when X starts.
