Saw the Invalid status. Perhaps I should explain further. The Fn key combo was pre-assigned on the laptop by DELL and worked very well with 12.04, 12.10 13.04 versions of Ubuntu. Since at present there is no way to save my brightness settings to my account, I could set the brightness each time
