Can you turn off your iptables script and try installing again? It
looks like it's having trouble pinging the network and then has a
cascading failure from there. Or do you have any other security stuff
running? (SELinux?) Also try purging (dpkg -P vmware-player) the
package and remove the /etc

(I doubt this will make any difference, it appears to be falling back to

You can change the folder by opening ~/.vmware/preferences and setting
prefvmx.defaultVMPath = "/path/here" to whatever you wish. I agree that
it doesn't make much sense and have filed a bug upstream.

I think the problem is /etc/init.d/vmware-player is just getting marked
as a config file and it shouldn't. Looking at other packages, it
appears /etc/rc2*.d symlinks don't themselves get removed until purge.

How can it not be a major problem to be missing the player kernel
modules for your current kernel?
Why should the player setup succeed when in reality something is broken
and the software won't work. At least if the installation fails the
user will see there is an error. Otherwise they'll believ

There are a lot of images placed there that the UI uses. We put all the
icons that are used for launchers, etc. in the correct places in
/usr/share. We keep to ourselves in our folder in /usr/lib so this
really isn't a problem.

I've spoken to dholback about this, and we're trying to work something
out. As a side not, people can always use the source package and use
module-assistant to build modules for kernels that aren't supported yet.
I agree, this is lame, but it helps in the short term.
