I reported a related bug on bugzilla.kernel.org back in 2009. Basically
there was a regression in the kernel logic for detecting 40 and 80 wire
PATA cables.
The bug was marked as WON'T FIX but may be related:

computer has one 40-wire IDE cable and one 80-wire IDE cable. I didn't
spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out the bug or agitate for a
fix. Instead, I went out and bought a second 80-wire cable (I didn't

I tried booting using older kernels and validating the disc using the
md5sum command above. The disc validates using 2.6.24-23, but not with
2.6.27-11 or 2.6.27-14.

I realized that my DVD drive was not using the latest firmware, so I
upgraded from LL0A to LL0D. This did not solve the problem.

I am getting the following error when trying to write CD image to disc
using Brasero: "a write error occured which was likely due to
