Thanks much!  It seems to have worked.  But upon reboot Ubuntu tried to do a Routine check of drives... and during that, at 28%, the machine hung, hard.  No response from keyboard (or mouse) at all.  This behavior is consistent, happens every time.  I also tried to boot in Recovery mode, and
