Well, after upgrading to 8.04 not even the backport to the 6.6 version
of the ati-driver works anymore. The deb-file can't be injected... So I
am left with 800x600 in vesa-mode right now. Any comments, hints or
suggestions?

Okay, I've installed the ati-driver:
xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.196+git20071117-0ubuntu0tv1_i386.deb
Unfortunately, no X came up... The log-file is atached. And yes, I
didn't use any xorg.conf...

Thank you for your comments and hints. I already tried to a
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
and chose the default options. This hasn't worked for me.
The live-cd failed to properly set up a X-Session, too...
I haven't tried the "on-the-edge"-drivers yet. I will come
back after checking them ou
After downgrading the driver to version 6.6.3-2ubuntu6 everything is
working again...

Since upgrading to Gutsy only the "vesa" driver works. The ati-driver
seems to have problems with the timing: The screen blanks, not even
