Wolfgang, I have that problem too, a few times.
It gets fixed if I restart the notification area from the "Add to Panel" menu.
But the battery icon problem doesn't get fixed even with that.

Here's the typical scenario when this bug almost always affects the panel --
After removing AC power, I close the laptop lid (to suspend the OS) and then
open the lid again after some time. That is when the power icon starts showing
"on AC
Public bug reported:
The notification area does not behave correctly, only a full system reboot
fixes it.
1. Sometimes there appear duplicate icons (like two wireless connection icons.)
2. The battery indicator symbol appears incorrectly -- sometimes it shows "on
AC power" even when on battery.
