I use to get the freeze problem sometimes ago. I use Cutecom. Now (Kernel 2.6.24-16 Hardy) it seems to be OK. If you unplugh the device while it is open, you have to leave it unpowered for at least about 5s else: Could not open /dev/ttyUSB0. I looks like a hardware problem of reset (Brown out)

Update: Previous tests was done without connecting the serial device. Looping RX to TX is OK. It freezes when you open /dev/ttyUSB0. It is a PC to Mobile phone LG adapter and I remember to have some trouble under Win$ to connect. I must use a specific sequence to plug either mobile or PC but
