I watched an HTML5 video when the desktop environment froze and
prevented any further input. The screen froze although the sound was
still being played. I noticed the laptop's fan turning on for a minutes
or so.
Only a reboot with the Magic SysRq Keys helped.

My X1 Carbon 6 Gen still suffers from the problem, no doubt about it. I'm
currently using Linux 5.3.0-24-generic.

I have the feeling that chances are higher that the system freezes when
I use suspend. When I shutdown and boot I can go a few days even without
a system crash.

The latest crash happened on the 4.19 mainline kernel by the way. When I
worked on my laptop yesterday, it wasn't attached to the power adapter.

Works in Kernel 3.8.0-20-generic. 16 brightness steps are available
again.
On a different note: I don't recall changing the brightness being so
laggy. The onscreen notification updates with about 0.5 seconds delay in
Gnome-Shell (3.8.1-0ubuntu1~raring1.2) and the brightness slider in the
settings
I'm experiencing this bug on every other boot since a few months now. At
first, I was using 12.10 but last week I updated to 13.04 and the issue
remains;
- the Ubuntu boot logo shows up
- then the screen goes black
- a movable mouse cursor becomes visible in the center of the screen

I ran into the same problem today; the trackpoint and the related keys
for left, middle and right click between keyboard and touchpad were not
working anymore after a cold boot on my Thinkpad X230 running Kernel
3.5.0-26-generic on Ubuntu 12.10-amd64.
This is the first time this error occurs,
Bug is appearing for me at this instant. Was having a conversation a
minute ago and even closing empathy didn't help. `killall telepathy
logger` worked when empathy wasn't running.

The same thing happens for me after my laptop switches of the screen due
to idleness. After moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard the screen
wakes up again but greets me with a frozen desktop. Mouse movement still
works though.
Using Ubuntu Natty with the latest updates.
